As one of the most populous campuses in the UK, Northumbria University had identified a desire to build affinity with prospective students through the clearing period

The Challenge

As one of the most populous campuses in the UK, Northumbria University had identified a desire to build affinity with prospective students throughout the busy clearing period each summer. 

Shout Digital were approached to assist in the production of a smartphone app that would support students with their decisions around clearing by offering them meaningful content on the process and, importantly, the courses that the University would be offering under clearing. 

The Solution

Knowing the popularity and breadth of smartphone use among the target generation, Shout Digital utilised its expertise as a recognised Xamarin partner to produce the app. 

The app was designed to support students through the clearing process, allowing them to quickly search for specific courses. All signposting within the app was geared heavily towards a 'call to action' with fast links to dedicated Northumbria University clearing web pages and the clearing hotline number that allowed students to get in touch with the Northumbria Clearing Team as quickly and as easily as possible.
 

The Result

Throughout its main two week period of use, 1,200 individual course searches were conducted within the app by not only UK based users but by audiences throughout Europe and from as far as China – cementing Northumbria as a firm choice for international students.

The app helped increase traffic to Northumbria University's clearing page on its website by 27%, helping it to successfully process a record 647 student placements in 2016. In the two days of clearing, Northumbria University rose to page one on the most relevant 'clearing' search terms on Google.
