In 2014, the Great Run Company launched Great Run Local, a series of free and inclusive weekly runs over a short distance that would allow beginners and family members to run together and offer more advanced runners a regular focus in order to improve their own performance.
Importantly for Great Run, they wanted these events to offer an accurate window into what it may be like for attendees at Great Run Local to be a part of one of Great run Company’s major events.
Having successfully launched Great Run Training for the organisation, Great Run came to Shout Digital once more to find a solution.
Keeping in mind Great Run’s determination to make the runs free for all, our response was to source and adapt some of the most advanced low-cost NFC tech and insert that into their Great Run Local-branded wristbands.
We then set about developing an android smartphone app that would allow Great Run Local organisers and volunteers to simply ‘tap in’ and ‘tap out’ participants on their wrists with their smartphones as they started and finished runs.
This solution instantly uploads results to the entrants’ Great Run Local profile online and also pings SMS messages to them within seconds of finishing their run, updating them on times and comparisons to personal bests.
Early events were so successful, that Great Run Local now extends to 20 locations across Britain and has encouraged the Great Run Company to publicly announce they are targeting 300,000 entrants into Great Run Local events by 2020.
The digital tech applied to Great Run Local won the 2014 Big Chip Award for Best User Experience Design.
The success of the solution has prompted Great Run Company to now launch four open water Great Swim Local weekly events. Shout Digital has been able to adapt the tech using waterproof wristbands, which come at a small charge for participants.
